Starter solenoid mod

Post by Derek »

I was getting fed up with the poor connection to the starter solenoid on my 907ie. These are the old style solenoid with the plug in connector that has a habit of falling out. Even with a cable tie round it doesn't always make a connection. The trouble is that the round socket terminals get enlarged and just don't grip the pins in the solenoid properly.
I wanted to fix this once and for all by replacing the solenoid with a spare 1098 one that I have and replace the loom connector with one that matches the inline connector on the solenoid but was unable to find a source for the connector anywhere.

However, since the original solenoid itself was ok but it's connector was source of the problem, I decided to modify it. I soldered wires directly to the pins in the connector and fitted an AMP Superseal connector to the other end, fitting the matching connector to the loom. It's working great now. The white goop is silicon I used to seal the soldered joints.

so with this mod, (Im having the same problem) have you just soldered the wire directly to the terminals or did you solder the original connectors removed from the plastic housing? thanks.

I have soldered directly onto the solenoid and then attached a waterproof block connector further along and higher up as for the two wires they are now individually encapsulated at the solenoid with heat shrink.

You can still separate and remove everything as before it just means that annoying little block now will never vibrate off the solenoid.
