Crack in fuel tank!

Hi all, I went out in the shed to tinker with my
907 when the smell of gasoline met me in the door...
Looked everywhere, no leaks but a very strong smell
then removed gas tank and found a fine crack halfway
round the front support of the tank. Any tips of fixing
this without welding and destroying the paintwork.

A thing like this happened to me when I had the 906.
The tank leaked from the rear support (near the seat) where there already are two stock welding.
The welder was able to fix it without any damage to the paint.
If, as I have understood, the crack is hidden, you will not have too much troubles to make weld it .

Over the last few months a brand new `old stock` 907ie tank (in red) has been advertised a few times but has not sold. It will no doubt appear again at some time. I think it was about £150 which is a pretty good price I think.

if your talking about the brand new 907 fuel tanks that listed on e-bay last year, they did sell. i bought 2 of them on e-bay over the past year. shipping them to the usa was extemely expensive, increasing the cost of the tanks by more than 50%. they do appear on e-bay from time to time. since these 907 fuel tanks listings always seem to be in europe, the shipping to krakan in sverige will be considerably less than to me here in philadelphia, USA. krakan, try and find a new one if you can. a much better solution than welding the old one.

Hi all, my tank is cracked where the front support is welded
to the bottom of the tank, however the crack is very small and
i have sanded down the surface and covered it with epoxi glue
and painted the small repair with a primer and a humbrol red
model paint (a very close match in the colour) but nobody will
notice because it´s the underside of the tank anyway. I am going
to cover the inside of the tank with tank sealer and then hopefully
it will be no more gas smell. I will let you know how it goes. Krakan

Hi Krakan....ive also done this as well on my 906.....multiple places leaking in cluding the peice your having problems with...ive also Epoxied the leaks......ive found that eventaully the petrol gets to the epoxy and you have to redo it annually......next step for me is some motorcycle shop carry a tank repair kit, but everything including the petcock has too come off (mine cant as it glued there).................

Mine has cracked there too... imilar repair involving grinding, epoxy, and a layer of fabric for support.

It must be catching, mine has cracked too! It looks like the problem was caused because the mounting post was only tacked in three places. I reckon it's best to find a friendly welder and get it plated and then re-welded properly. Where the tank has cracked, there is a stress point which will only get bigger. Epoxy will not stop this.

So I fixed the leak.
Where there were a three point weld, I made a weld on all the line.
It worked well.

Underneath the tank at the front where the post is attached, my tank had only three spot welds. When I grabbed the post and gently moved it I could see the tank flexing. The crack started from there, it was about 10mm long.

First of all, I had no visible crack but only a gasoline sweating.
The problem was in the back of the tank, where it is fixed to the frame by two bolts.
Where there were two (or three, I can't remember) weld spots, I made a long weld on all the line.
No matter, if your crack is only 10 mm., I think the best thing is a good weld, above all if the crack was not visible.

Also to me when i bought the bike the fuel leak tn that point mounted on the frame.....
same thing like you good welding (13 euro)and no many problem

You've got me worried now. I thought the only weak point was at the front of the tank. Never a dull moment with a Paso!

Btw, not "exact to topic", but i just coated inside of my 750 Pasos fuel tank with chemicals and seems, that its "better, than new". :laugh: Coast was about 80€(not very cheap, but i am 100% satisfied to result). Mine didnt leak from anywhere, but i wanted to coat it BEFORE it start to leak.... maybe next winter also 907IE tank....
