Soon to be 750 paso owner

hello there!!
just wanted to check in and say 'hi!'. hi!
i am going to be getting an '87 in the summer after i get my motorcycle license.
a friend of mine who is getting a new ST3 is going to set me up with his paso.
i have enjoyed lurking here, and am looking forward to being a paso owner. the info here is great!
i hope that the tire situation gets better, and that at least another standard option can be had (i am not holding my breath, but some better tires would be nice!)

Hello and welcome to the Forum! It seems like this will be your first street bike. Is this so?

If it is, my personal opinion is that the Paso makes a poor "first" motorcycle. A much better bike would be a Monster 600/620/750 as they are much more upright in the riding position and have no bodywork. The Paso has somewhat tricky handling and certain body parts are unobtanium. Every new rider drops their bike, me included and I have dropped my 748 with 35 years of street riding. It happens, beleive me.

Jon is right.
I dropped a lot my first bike (a Paso 906) both when she was still and when I was riding...
The Paso is not an easy bike for a beginner...

i am taking a rider course at the end of march, at which time, if i pass, i will get my license.
before i get the paso, i will be riding an '83 kawasaki gpz550.
definitely more up right, but, i like the way the paso fits me better. i am more comfortable a little leaned forward. the gpz feels small to me. but that has to do with the pegs being a little more forward.
once i master the gpz, on to the paso!

Jon`s absolutely right. The Paso is no beginners bike.
I say this because the Paso was also my first bike :umm:
I made the drivers licence on a Honda CB450S and then drove 200cc scooters for years but riding a Paso is a total different thing.
If it wasn`t too risky to ruin the bike, the drivers test should be done riding the Paso.
I had crashed the Paso soon as there are worlds apart between the CB450S and the Paso handling.
Meanwhile I also own a Gilera 600 Nordwest which makes me notice the difference in handling extremely so I`ve always ridden the Paso with more respect. At the end it depends on personal riding skills and how fast you get used to the Paso`s peculiarities.

PS: my mechanic always says if you can ride a Paso you can ride everything. I will leave this uncommented as it`s probably true.

my friends who ride, will not let me have the paso as a first bike for all those reasons. i am eager, but not stupid.
as someone who is in their late 30's, i am taking this very seriously, and understand that i need to be 'ready' to take on the paso.
i love the look and sound of the bike, and actually look forward to taking care of her.

Aside from telling you that the Paso wasn't an ideal beginners bike, I forgot to turn on Preach mode so here goes;

[preach on] Buy the BEST gear you can afford NOW. As a new biker you may be tempted to ride in a wife beater and flip flops and I will tell you that it's pure foolishisness.

The basics must be covered, Full Face helmet, real moto gloves, jacket with armor, overpants with armor, boots above the ankle. Wear the gear EVERY TIME you get on the bike. I know it's a pain but it will take only 1 get off to see how valuable it can be. Leathers are better but more costly and hotter in summer. They do offer slightly better protection over the fabrics but not that much at street speeds. Did I mention BUY GOOD GEAR!!!! [preach off]

If you already have full gear, just ignore the above rant.
