The stripes could be done also with the paint, but for the decals is a problem.
Those decals in auction

... I'm not sure they are original...
The risk is they lose the colour

...

That would be a reason to NOT clear-coat over them, just in case they fade and you want to replace them. With my second set of bodywork, I'm thinking of having a buddy copy the graphics with regular vinyl, and I will not clear-coat over them in case they fade. I'm thinking of painting my second set of bodywork yellow....I like yellow. :lick:

OK, you can repaint the bike without the clear coat (I don't like it), no matter, if you want to change the colour, I wouldn't care about the decals.
I would use the stock decals only for a "as new" restoring.

The paint is still clear-coated, but the decals are put on afterwards. This way, the decals are not clear-coated over. Many bikes are sold, brand-new, without the decals clear-coated over. My wife's 1993 and 1994 Suzuki GSX-R750 bikes did not have their graphics and decals clear-coated over, but the paint was clear-coated.

I know a lot of guys who do this when they are repainting their bikes....mainly because they either ride too fast on the street or do a lot of trackdays and crash fairly often.

They don't clear coat over the decals so it is easier to remove them to repaint small spots and blend the paint. I have a friend with a vinyl cutter, so decals are *free* if I give him the file with the graphic on it already. None of the decals or stickers on the side fairings of my 748 are clear-coated......but the paint is. After 3+ years and more than 8000 miles, none of them are showing signs of fading nor peeling (Even the "DUCATI 748" is on top of the clear-coat)...

A good option might be finding someone who can make the vinyl decals.
It wouldn't be too much difficult.

I think, the only good way to put decails, is to put them just before clearcoating

Surely decails stay better in surface, what is grinded softly after painting ("ready for clearcoat"). Clearcoat needs soft grinded surface....
