750 Paso finally started, RPMs are out the roof!

Post by smitty2600 »

After sitting for 3-4 years I decided to restore my bike and get it back on the road. Here's what was accomplished:

Task Performed and Date
Removed Fairings 15-May-07
Drained Fuel 16-May-07
Removed Fuel Filter 16-May-07
Removed Rear Blinkers 16-May-07
Inspected Hoses 16-May-07
Cleaned Gas Tank 20-May-07
Bled Rear Brakes 20-May-07
Bled Front Brakes 20-May-07
Replaced Fork Oil 21-May-07
Replaced Clutch O-Ring 22-May-07
Bled Clutch 22-May-07
Drained Oil 23-May-07
Removed Oil Cooler Lines 23-May-07
Bought New Rear Blinkers 24-May-07
Installed After Market Rear Blinkers 28-May-07
Replaced Oil Filter 28-May-07
Replaced Fuel Filter 28-May-07
Replaced Timing Belts 28-May-07
Tested Fuel Pump 28-May-07
Checked Fuel Lines 28-May-07
Charged Battery 28-May-07
Replaced Spark Plugs 28-May-07
Checked Air Filter 29-May-07
Painted Clutch Cover 29-May-07
Replaced Oil Cooler Lines 1-Jun-07
Filled Oil 1-Jun-07

Still need to replace the tires, but it looks like the bike is almost ready for action.

Started the bike on 1-Jun-07 however the RPMs is sitting at over 6000 and it will not go down. Exhaust pipe was glowing bright red.

So I take it that it's getting too much fuel.

I have some quick questions:

1. Under the gas tank there are three holes: one that goes to the petcock and two others on the rightside of the tank, which connection should the reserve hose connect to (the front or rear)?

2. Do you think that I need to rebuild the carburetor / is the float valve stuck / is this why the RPMs are high?

3. Who has the cheapest rebuild kit.... will this one work? http://www.cbperformance.com/catalog.asp?ProductID=1200

Thanks.....

Hi Smitty,
good work!
it's a good new when a Paso come back on the road  .
The carburetor would be a Weber DNCF 44, even if, since I have a 907, can't be 100% sure.
So I ask other members say the last word.

Since nothing that you have done to the bike has effected the carb nor the throttle cables and their pull (unless the cable is stuck), it's probably safe to assume that you have varnish and other crud in your carb that is making some internal component stick. Personally, I'd clean the carb.

Sometimes, tapping on a solid section of the outside of the carb with a something like the handle of a screwdriver can knock a jet or needle back into place. Mixing some carb cleaner with the gas, running the engine long enough to get the mixture into the carb, then letting it sit overnight can help. I've also removed the line from the tank and shot straight carb cleaner into the fuel inlet line into the carb to see if it will clean the carb, but........all these efforts, if they work, is only a temporary fix, and you'll still wind up rebuilding the carb, anyway.

Never know, you may have jets and needles that look like mine did (twin Dellorto conversion).....

Smitty don't waste time, after 3-4 yrs , rebuild the carb/carbs, if you don't have a cleaning tank to cook the carbs in try you local bike shop. Also relube the cables. Good luck

Is the carb the stock Weber? Check for blockage on the return line, and into the tank. I ended up tearing my carbs apart and cleaning them after they had sat for five years. They are Mikuni's.

Yes I have the stock Weber. I found a shop that will do the rebuild for $40 USD. I'll buy the rebuild kit and take them the carb (they have a tank that will remove all the old gunk).
