charging problem

Post by yellerduck »

I have a 1990 750 Sport that has a lot of the same parts as the Paso. Today, went riding a bit and my bike quit on me. Kinda of bogged down. The battery was completely dead. Push started it and it would run great for a few minutes, then bog down dead again. Let it sit for a moment same thing, push it off runs for a bit then dies. Got it back home and checked battery, very low voltage. Put it on my charger for a while and when I crank it, it doesn't appear that the battery is charging. Starts out at like 12v and then it steadily goes down while the bike is running. I have an official maintenance manual which is little help. What do I need to do to check the regulator? If it is bad, is it impossible to find? Please help, Davy.

FIXED!

Ok, for the benefit of the forum. I ordered a new regulator rectifier from desmotimes. After I installed it, I was still not getting a good charge. I took the wire from the regulator that charges the battery and hooked it directly to the + post and whala it charges. After inspecting the wire that runs through my harness, I noticed that it is fused and the fuse wasn't blown but very corroded. The source of my problem. The original regulator may still be good, but I'm not going back through the trouble to hook it back up just to see. Lesson learned, carefully inspect all your connections and trace all wires before spending the $$ for new parts!
