Steering damper MUST BE ADJUSTED to quite lightly mode!!! I have heard this from my friend(888 SP4 owner) and he have played alot with these things. He use Öhlins damper, what is adjustable. ...something good from Sweden...

It does appear that the swivel joint has the range of motion needed. Yes the bolt in the vertical position would have been more like the stock install. This part is not structural so it look to be ok.

the vertical pivot bolt would be nicer.
spherical bearings are strongest and will last longer in load applications in the central axis.

of course, a steering damper sees 99.9% of it's time in the "straight ahead" position; you're in trouble if you have the steering at lock at any speed - unless you're into controlled power-slides...

so long as the strength is there when the steering is central is all you really need for the damper to be effective.
you need to be able to turn lock to lock (which you appear to have)
and
you appear to have used the full travel of the damper.

happy riding.
