?????front wheel and axle parts?????

Post by Johnnie »

I'm almost done getting my 88 limited gone thru. but I'm not sure about the front axle parts. I was missing the front axle washer (right side) I have machined a replacement, but the parts book shows 2 different parts as part of the speedo drive, is the second part another washer??? it looks like it in the parts illustration but doesnt mention it in the maint manual description.
also the maint manual says the torque is 50 ft lbs for the axle(seems like alot), will that crush the speedo drive??? any help would be appreciated. John

No, it should not harm the speedo drive, as the internal steel spacer of the speedo drive unit acts as an inner race to a bearing. It takes all of the force from torquing the axle down. The speedo drive ring fits into a little slot on the front wheel and is free to spin once the axle is torqued within the speedo drive housing. There should not be any binding. You can feel how fluid the assembly moves if you have the front end in the air and spin the wheel once you have the axle torqued. It is actually a good practice to make sure that you didn't forget or add any parts unnecessarily and have binding of the wheel. You can also check for brake drag by doing this.

I look for this problem too, but the other piece of speedo drive no exist, in fact this part on the table have not a number.
Besides, the space between brake rotor and brake caliper on right/left side is exact without any other spacer.
50 ft/lbs not crush the speedo drive because inside part of it is a distance piece.
