Mustergutachten BRD für Umrüstung auf 130/70-16 u. 160/70-16

Post by Banner65 »

in Germany most changes done to a vehicle, like i.e. a different tire size, exhaust etc. require an expert`s report. With that report you go to the technical vehicle inspection dept. (TÜV) and if they accept it they will officially homologate it and enregister the change in the vehicle`s papers.
If they don`t or you drive around w/o any ABE (let`s call that a letter of conformity) the modification is not legal. In some cases your vehicle`s insurance is void then and if something happens (ie an accident caused by the modfication) you`re screwed.

Bernd is currently looking for homologation documents for the tire combination 130/70-16 Sportec M3 and 160/70-16 ME1 and asked if anyone has these papers.

Thanks, G. Do you know if it's easy to fit those tyres, and how they ride?

no I don`t. I have seen though some years ago a Paso with a 160/70-16 rear. It was an M59X like the original 160/60. The only things I can remember is that the bike had the original swingarm and that the owner had to remove it (as he hadn`t homologated that size).
Sidenote, although that size might be an alternative there seems to be only one manufacturer who produces these tires, Metzeler. So sooner or later these may end up like the M59X. Discontinued as not profitable. However at the moment they still exist ...

PS: The 180/60-16 Avon AV72 Cobra finally came out here and I will go for that one. Avon sent me a document of compliance for the AV72 in combination with a 130/70-16 AV45 Azaro ST. So that`s my first step towards homologation.

In Italy is quite impossible legalize any change to a vehicle :,( :,( :,( :,( :,( :,( , so the people who don't want be "screwed" go to Germany to do the TUV homologation which is worth in all the countries of the Europe.

will that 180/60 work without modification??
did you have to move the fender for the av45?
potential good news on the tire front!

it was done before with the AM22 rear, which according to Avon was the predecessor of the AV72. I`m sure you have to lift the front fender a bit as the tire is higher. You`ll need a 520 chain and some spacers under the sprockets to move the chain from the tire. That is what I was told by the company which did the conversion a few years ago.
I`ll let you know when I have the tires, but that can still take a bit as my bike is not yet ready to hit the road.

Hallo zusammen,

Hello everybody,
When i bought my paso 906 in 2001, it already came with a combination
Metzeler ME33 Lazer Front, dimension 120/80 VB 16 and Metzeler ME1 MBS CompK,
dimension 160/70 VB16, all written in the vehicle registration document. Since
the Me33 Lazer isn´t available anymore i have mountet a Metzeler Lasertec 120/80 VB16.
What Paso750 said is correct: you have to put some spacers under the rear sprocket to move the chain from the tire and use a 520 chain.

I don't want to burst anyones bubble, but I'm sure I read recently that the earliest paso 750's were fitted with a 520 chain but that they soon switched to a 530. The reason was that the heavier 520 caused excessive wear of the driveline components. Specifically the front sprocket bearing ,I think.
