The internal parts are probably plastic so it`s better not to use oil. (just a guess, could be brass or some other material also)

hi,

The internal parts are from steel.
I broke one two years ago.

My dealer also told me a few years ago that this part is not new for sale anymore, but on ebay i already bought two.

To my opinion you'd better not oil it because it will leak out and could get on the front tyre.

use the thick brown grease (there are special grease pumps to insert the grease)

 good luck! ab.

That part is also fitted to the 750ss. You won't believe this but the 'grease nipple' is fake! It doesn't go anywhere -I checked this when I had to buy a new one and had some difficulty getting any grease up/in there so I broke up the old one and found this out. What a laugh. If you want to lubricate the speedo drive then my way is to remove the drive and take off the retainer circlip and inner bush so that there is some play to the drive then drip some light oil into the mechanism. Rebuild it and wipe off excess oil - repeat every three months.

:?

Yep, there sure was some shoddy machining of certain components in those days. I found on one of my DelOrto carbs that the passage from one of the choke chambers to the carb had not been drilled through. My bike starts fine using the choke on just one carb, so I left it as it was.

good to know. Often companies save money on parts like these and make them in plastic.

I guess the one from the 750Ss has a different ratio as the wheels are 17". My grease nipple is not fake. As Skins noticed on his carb there may be production differences also here :)
