Elecric system Q

Post by Tamburinifan »

Is a reading of 12,3V low enough to make the starter system disfunction?
All other parts of it is OK, I think.

Asking cause I put in a new sprag, checked that it functioned OK before it all went together.
Starter relay & motor gets juice & runs.
Could the clock drain the battery from 12,7-12,8 to 12,3V in 2 weeks? :?

Frustrated after all the work.... :( :dunno:

Starter should run good until 11v at least: it might "drain" all the voltage to the ignition/injection and still run!

0.4v is a very low difference and it should not matter in the working system.
I suppose you should measure the voltage while the starter is running "under load" just in the electric joint of the starter body.

Anyhow, if you put 4th gear and a friend of yours helps pushing, the engine should start easily, this will tell you there're no other troubles in the engine (I mean "big big troubles!")
have a nice ride, Nicola

Are you measuring Voltage when running or not running?

Drain from 12.7ish to 12.4 in two weeks by the clock only? I think Yes. You don't need much of a draw to drop the Voltage of the batter by .4V in 2 weeks. Of course this depends on the health of the battery too.

Cheers

I hate to tell you this, but I think it is the sprag or the gear shoulder that the sprag engages with.
I replaced my starter clutch sprag back when I had about 7000 miles. I now have 50,000 miles on it and have never had to replace it again. What happens is most bike sit around and the battery gets weak. This is because the quartz clock takes alot of juice and runs the battery down when the Paso sits. You could disconnect the clock or ride more often. Anyway, If you are sure the starter motor is turning, the the sprag is not being engaged. My starter motor would spin like crazy but the sprag was the problem. Since you replaced the sprag clutch, aligned the pin and got it put back nice and flat and straight, the only other thing it could be is the shoulder of the gear that it engages with is worn enough to mess things up.

That was the case here. Gear wouldn`t lock in any direction.

Was it a new or used sprag??

I assume you have seen this info: http://ccrma-www.stanford.edu/~peer/Duc ... pring.html

Other than clean every electric connectio between the starter and the solenoid to make sure it receives MAX voltage, I'm at a loss.

Have you renewed brushes in the starter??

1 brush renewed, new sprag. Tired of fixing semiwornout ones w all the work involved. :(
All connections fixed, shining copper. :)

Starter works now, fixed an old wheel from my Monster.
