80W front light bulb!

Post by Tamburinifan »

What happends?

Anyone done it?
If you tried, which functions work bad when doing this (main concern ECU) ?
Problems only occur during highbeam?

907Ie have quite small alternator, 350W, so if You want more current, be carefull, that Your battery is in top charge by voltmeter. If voltage drop enough, then ECU start to make misfires, or not anymore power in battery to start bike! i realized this, when i add double lights to my 907 and then i solved it by adding extra switch for another bulb, so i use both ONLY, when i really need!!! :smoke:

won`t you have heat issues also ? There`re guys that experimented with stronger bulbs. I don`t recall if in this forum or in another but some had problems that the plastic of the reflector housing started to melt a bit. But to be honest I also don´t know what size bulb they used.

I replaced the 60/55W bulb with a 100/80W on my 750 (legal in the UK - I asked the police!), but added 2 relays, one for main and one for dipped beam, as the lighting from a standard bulb was getting dimmer over the years and I wanted to stop the headlight current all going thru the light switch.

There is now a wire (with a 10A fuse) running from the battery (actually the starter solenoid terminal) to the supply of both relays, while the wires from the light switch 'switch' the relays instead of going to the headlight bulb. I also had to add an earth connection for each relay. It may have been a good idea to improve the earth connection from the headlight also, I'll look into that.

Adding the relays was well worth doing, I can see where I'm going at night now! I haven't noticed any deterioration of the headlamp but now it's been mentioned will keep an eye on it. And of course on a 750 I haven't got an ECU and injectors to draw current.

I`ve done that, too, good mod.

Hmmm, when I have replaced all bulbs w LED`s, maybe 100/80W will work w MyECU that I have now...

Ths f info, all! :)

Has anyone tried one of the Gas discharge kits on a Paso
I have just fitted one to a friends Diversion and it works a treat - he can now see further than the end of the front wheel and was quite an easy fit !

Hey Andy,
are those legal ?
I switched to Xenon lights on my Audi but changed the complete headlights. Reflector and lens are not appropriate for Xenon light so these need to be changed if you want to have it legal here (amongst some other things).
The Pasos headlight is not so different. Having this in mind I wonder if the light will become diffuse and blind others.
I also wonder how hi - low beam is solved as Xenon needs to "fire up" and does not switch on/off as fast as a normal bulb hence making it useless if you want to flash your light. (in car`s you would have a normal and a Xenon bulb or bi-Xenon but in the Paso there`s only one bulb)?!

Hi G

They are legal over here but I seriously doubt they'd pass the TUV test (our MOT basically just looks at beam alignement and whether it works)

The flash is pretty non functional as it is in Cars that have HID lights as well as, as you say the arc has to be struck.
The kit we fitted I didn't look at the actual shroud around the bulb too closely I have to say as I was emplyoed more for my wiring/ soldering skills than anything else (my friend actual did the fitting of the bulb unit into the light - which considering it just fits like an H4 type bulb is about the extent of his abilities  ). Certainly when fitted though it functions with a high beam as well as Dip.

Right I'm off to kidnap his bike and see what I can see !
