Re: Bits for attaching side panels to tank
I am going to see a mate at the weekend who likes to play with lathes and the such like as a hobby and I shall see what he thinks to spending some time making some of these - my problem is that on my bike I have none so can any one post a couple of photo's and maybe a life size diagram or dimensuions on a drawing of these "nipples" so that I can give him an idea. Assuming folk have had theirs knackered like mine I reckon a run of about 100 should suit everyone on the site possibly interested. Assuming it's cost effective for him?
It will also help keep my side panels in situ.
I shall also see if i can get hold of the tank rubbers from my local dealer to help get a tight fit.
Alternatively to save my Mirrors saga I can get them made on an as ordered and paid for basis

For sure, no lathe needed, just work with hacksaw, grinding wheel, electric drill ... crude, but effectiveFinnpaso wrote:Surely with lathe is very simple to make such parts, but if You can(WANT!) play with Pasos, then You can also make such easy part from metal in Your garrage table... It takes about 30 mins to make such, if U have some basic tools, not lathe.... Take some beers and time goes faster, when U make it!

Maybe use a "button head" cap screw ... like this:

... and chamfer or round off the bottom edge of the head a little to make it easier to withdraw from the grommet ... and glue a matching nut onto the fairing for attachment ... something like that ... you see, no beer needed!

Re: Bits for attaching side panels to tank
Well guys I have just been out inspecting what is left of the lugs on my side panels and it isn't a lot as they have been ground off but what I have found is a load of bits left from my Ikea flat pack furniture bags and there are an several wooden lugs there that look like they can can be shaped to fit and a good few metal studs that can be cut down to do the same.
If any one can come up with some dimensions it would be appreciated.

Re: Bits for attaching side panels to tank
I'd be happy to make up a few, especially if someone will post dimensions, or loan me a part. I don't even have threaded studs, so I'd make something that either screws onto the stud, or could be stuck right on the fairing where the bolts were gone.
Kurt - that wasn't me at Lars Anderson - I usually make it, but I was competing in the Moto Giro in VT that day. I live in Littleton, MA about 3 mi from Moto Market - do you ever go to Euro Bike night on Thur? If you come by and loan me a stud and buy me 4 grommets, I'll make up 2 studs for you...:-)

Hi Sam -- small world indeed. I rarely get to Thursday nights at MotoMarket, what with the wretched traffic at that hour heading out of Boston.samandkimberly wrote:I'd be happy to make up a few, especially if someone will post dimensions, or loan me a part. But we should be able to figure out a meeting when I can bring you one of the "bullets." Will add more grommets to my order at Seacoast (will call and give them the CORRECT P/N). I will send you a PM with my ph# and email.
Thanks!

Re: Bits for attaching side panels to tank
That makes perfect sense. But what is the thread sticking out of the panel? It looks like M6, about 15mm - that about right?persempre907 wrote:Total height 17 mm.

Re: Bits for attaching side panels to tank
are they all threaded I have been advised by my dealer that they recall they should be lipped nipples that are clasped by the seal. was a bolt later used or is this a case where there are two types.

Re: Bits for attaching side panels to tank
Hi Kurt,
if you fail to find the bullets, I can machine them for you. (private machine shop containing a toolroom lathe, 2 tool room grinders, conventional milling machine, dead CNC milling machine, sawing machine, big drill, belt grinder and a pile of tools)
What's the size of the threat in the picture anyway? M8 of bigger?
How many you need? (the lesser the better, means lesser work)
I don't need a drawing as I have fairing parts hanging around incl. the bullet.
let me know.

Hi Ducbertus,
Wow, you have quite the set up! The thread on the stud is 6mm (as Sam surmised). I plan to take the panel off soon and measure everything, including the height of the boss that the stud is mounted into. All those dimensions should give us the proper fit to the tank. Also, Sam (who lives not far from me) has also offered to make them up. Maybe we can have a US and a EU supplier, since it sounds like quite a few of these are MIA.
My Duc dealer has ordered the oblong grommets (4) that go into the tank. (Sam: I ordered a set for you, too, at Seacoast.) I am missing all four of the grommets and just two of the bullets. Will come back with more info since others inquiring minds want to know.
... more news as it happens

Re: Bits for attaching side panels to tank
I could use a set of these also...rubber bits and bullets.
Once you have your bits could you post a summary of what to ask for and from where?
Cheers

Re: Bits for attaching side panels to tank
Hi Andrew, will do! The grommets are en route from Ducati (I hope) as ordered by my dealer, and I've been riding instead of wrenching. Looks like there's enough demand to start making these up.andrew_b wrote:I could use a set of these also...rubber bits and bullets.
