EXACT material of 907/906 expansion tank???

Post by Finnpaso »

Need to know! One of my tanks (reserve) is leaking from "lines" in both side of hose tube to radiator. I have here plastic welder, but need to know exact material of tank and if someone knows it 100%, then i dont need more... I am not making yet fiberglass, or aluminium work, but i want to see, isn it possible to weld it to be "like a new"..... Those other methods come later, if i am not succesfull with this....

Ps. I know, here are some discussions about tank, but i need only to know material of it ! Thanks already! :smoke:

Btw, this tank dont have same problem, as one my earlier with bented radiator connectioon tube, what i fixed by making (with lathe) suitable brass "inside tube" to hose connection tube (to make it "round" again)... It was fixed by that way very well. :)

Hi Finpaso,

The material is HDPE (High Density Polyethyleen)
This is perfectly weldable.
I faced the same problem last year and had it welded for €15. :P
No problem eversince.

Finnpaso,I have a tank, what do you have to trade? By the way it looks like the reflector is glued onto the M1R,I don't want to break it so give me some time to figure how to heat it up to get it off in one (actually 2, then reflector and the mount) piece

There's no problem so bad that a little fixing can't make it worse! : )

Hi Finnpaso, How did you go welding your expansion tank?

I bought one off ebay a while ago. It had a crack in the outlet spout for the over flow. I noticed, when the cap is put on an screwed down, this puts presure on the rubber drain hose connected to it, bending the outlet down slightly. After a prolonged period it must have cracked.
I had it repaired. The repairer remelted the plastic around the crack and it all took it`s original form. Supprisingly it`s quite strong.
To prevent it from happening again, I trimmed the bottom of the cap where it contacts the hose. Now there is a slight gap between the two.
And remember: ride hard, take chances!

I found (close my home) one guy, who have fixed (by WELDING) one 907 cooolant bottle (from my friends 907) with good result some years ago, but he have to know material and that "finding right material" is my job in this work. When i get those HDPE sticks, i take sticks and cannister to that welder and then he weld it by using hot air blower, what is designed to just such jobs. So, i let rest of work to him and pay for that some €'s I have only normal hot air blower, what is not good for welding.... :smoke: They told in plastic shop, that in worst case, that material can take 1 monthes to come to me and its not so cheap at all... I take it for few canisters (for future needs)

An other, less nicer solution is to cut chips from those 140 or 240 ltr litter bins, clean the material and melt them in to the cracked area of the container.
different colours are just a matter of different pigments to color the materials, but have no, or at least very little influence on the end results.
As the container is out of sight it may a solution.

You are 100% right! I planned also that way,as You told, but i am virgo, so everything must be "exact", so i ordered that material.... and in that welding process. its better, that welding material is "round". As i told, U are right...

return from Egypt to Finland in the middle of winter...lol.
you must be insane.
fire up the sauna...and get the white wine ready.

does the sun even come up during the day in January?
I spent a few days in Lahti some years ago and nearly froze to death...lucky all the Finnish girls were friendly...or drunk.

In Brisbane it never gets below 15 degrees Celsius here for max. temp...maybe down to 2 degrees on the coldest of days...
