Won't Start, but tries

Post by 93IE »

I just tried to start it up after replacing the fuel pump, fuel lines, and did the POR 15 on the inside of the tank. It had bad gas in it and some rust. It tried to fire a couple of times, but wouldn't stay on. Is it possible the injectors are dirty? I ran the fuel pump with the bypass hose run into a gas can to make sure it was purged and was getting fuel back.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

the spark plugs are clean and ok ? If it stood dry for some time with tank etc removed it could be that some dirt dried in the injectors. Also now you may have air in the fuel lines but this should go away after a short time.
It won`t stay on even with choke ?

I am leaning towards something in the injectors. It has new plugs, fuel lines, fuel pump, and the tank is clean. I bled all of the air from the fuel lines. I guess my question is, can I take the circlip off the top of the injector to disassemble to clean, or do I need to remove the injectors from the motor to clean them. I did get it to start, but only to have it run for 2 or 3 seconds, and then not be able to restart for several minutes. I do not get a raw fuel smell from the exhaust and the plugs are not wet.

Thanks,
Preston

there are additive fuel system cleaners you add in the tank, but I don`t know if they really help. After all where does any dirt that`s cleaned out go other than inside the engine ?!
The last injectors that I had bought for my car were used ones, but cleaned in an ultrasonic bath. (most machine shops have one)

If You have used POR 15, then ALL lines must be open to and from tank! Check that first. Check then, does it make spark? Does fuel pump return fuel to tank via return line? If fuel system return fuel to tank back again (via return line surely) and You have good spark in both plugs, then you have clogged injectors !!! Such happened to me one time and reason was one glogged injector. it didnt start with one injector! ..check, check, check.... :smoke:

Antti,
Do I need to remove the injector body from the manifold, or disassemble in place to clean. I don't want to ruin a gasket if not necessary.
Thanks,
Preston

Easier to dismount the TB`s but you can leave the manifolds on the heads.

If all checks lead to glogged injector(s), then You have to take them away to injector maintain place/shop, as ONLY there they can change that input filter inside injector! And there they surely check "injection" spray that its ok. I get very good papers from local injector maintain company and they told, that AT least in every 40 000 kms injectors must maintained and check, that they work normally. btw, its not so expensive! You have to take then throttle bodies away and take injectors away. Dont worry about gasgets, as such company have right gaskets(rubber!) and they are not so expensive at all.... As i told, make such maintain, IF searching leads to some injector "falure" !!!! still: if there is some shit in that injector input filter, You cant do anything for it, U have to take it to maintainer !!!! Injection system NEEDS very good filters, as NOTHING shit cant come to injector and that is MOST common problem in injections in motorbikes !!! Allways have to look, when have changed new fuel filter..... Such tell to me those injection specialists, so its not my "taught" at all..... I allways listen more clever peopple, than me.

I removed the injectors and took them to an injector shop. They did an ultrasonic cleaning, replaced o rings, filters and nozzels. One injector was plugged, the other ok. Put them back in the bike, purged the lines and it started right up. I'm starting to feel better about this bike now, but have spent quite a bit of time on it. I'll mount the new coolant recovery bottle tomorrow, get tires next week, and should be all good.
Thanks to everyone for the suggestions and moral support.

Excellent news that the injector was the root cause of your problems. Once you sort these issues out, you will have a rock solid bike.

It may seem like a lot of heartache so far, but persevere and you will be rewarded with an awesome bike that is fun and unique. It will draw looks and folks will ask what it is. Owning an older Duc can be a chore at times but well worth it!
