BUB Exhaust ????

Post by ducinthebay »

I have a set of BUB exhaust pipes for my 750 Sport project. I am trying to take out the baffles to repack them. Has anyone else ever taken these apart? There is a rivet in the back that I drilled out, but getting the core out is proving difficult. I have tried several bearing pullers, but I just can't get enough purchase on the inside of the core to get it loose.

Any insight is appreciated.

Cheers,

Most after market exhaust will have a length of the baffle that fits tightly at the front. A little heat from either propane or mapp without oxy will usually be enough to allow the baffle to slip out.
Also most of the baffles I have run across have more than one rivet. Others the can comes off and the baffle is part of the header system. I have never taken a bub system apart so your mileage may vary

Yup, mine look just like that, scratches and all, except mine are flat black. They have a reverse cone on the end that they welded to a baffle core. The whole bit is (as best I can tell) slipped into the end of the pipe and one pop rivet holds it in. I tried the heat already. Maybe I'll try more. Surely can't ruin the finish of flat black rattle can. I sprayed on some penetrating oil, so maybe that will work its magic in a few days. I also rapped on it with a hammer all the way around to loosten things up. I'm using an expanding core bearing puller with a slide hammer, but the core just doesn't get enough purchase and keeps slipping out. I need to make a better puller bit I think.

Currently, BUB makes pipes mostly for Harleys and other cruisers. A California company that sponsored the land speed record bike the past few years. They made pipes for the Paso, and apparently the Sport. The Sport pipes are just a bit shorter than the Paso pipes, as the Paso headers are shorter than the Sports.

Ducinthebay,

Have not been inside a Bub muffler, but they are all different and never as you imagine. Here are some photos of inside a Suzuki GX1400 muffler that I stripped out for a wee project that I'm working on.
Image

The end cap looked like it was held on by 6 rivets, this was just to fool you. Tried opening it up with a plazma cutter, that didn't work, so cut the last 100mm off the end with a tungstin blade in a drop saw.
Image

Inside was a huge baffle, a thick lining and the whole thing was very heavy.

Once all the crap was removed it worked a treat, light and sufficiently noisey.

I know when I cut down my Monster exhaust the front of the baffle had been tack welded in situ and no amount of heat woulld seperate it in the end I ground it through and then re welded I wonder if yours may of had a similiar build set up if all else fails run a grinder around the front seam and see it that loosens it, if it is in matt black already you can re weld and re paint good as new.

you didn´t have to delete it immedeately :) I was just saying that for the future and for everyone. I guess standard monitor size is still 17" and 19" although they`re getting bigger and bigger lately. 1024x786 is still a good picture size for this forum and such a screensize w/o having to scroll up and down or side to side to see the whole picture.
