Bought a 1988 paso 750. wow

ok so finding someone that works on ducatis is a hard to find deal here in michigan. anyone know someone. will travel a little ways ....were pretty sure a piece broke off in the case. but gonna lift the heads first....

Found 1 company in kalamazoo, but he wants about $45.00 an hour. my guess is its gonna take a good long time to do this lol.

Might just part the bike out, if its gonna be too expensive.

didnt know this bike was that rare. But will still give it a try. i like it and would love to see it running.


EDIT: ok now thats not 1 but now 4 companys ive talked to and not one will touch it. none of them can find parts and dont they want to get into a project of this kind. so now im gonna offically sell it. i know i can get what i payed for it so.

I appreciate all of your help everyone. I will just have to find another project bike that is a bit newer.

$45.00 an hr for a reputable Ducati mechanic is dirt cheap..... Hell thats a damn cheap shop labor rate for any motorcycle shop.

well true. i got a engine manual for it yesterday. first gonna remove the heads and check there make sure no metal is top side, make sure valves are not beat up at all. then take off the heads and pistons, and see if i cant find the piece of metal inside. when we put it in gear and roll the bike around it dont make a noise. so the metal has to be sitting on the bottom. when it was running it must be getting banged around in there.

before removing the cylinders I`d remove the engine covers specially the left one.

ahh ok thanks casing was broke right onfront of the chain gear. will time out the heads first ofcourse. hopefully can pull the cylinders off and look right down in the case HOPEFULLY. got the service manual off of this site so that helps. thanks guys.

yea i like the bike. going to pick it up tommorow. gonna keep the engine in the bike, and just take the heads and cylinders off with it all in there. remove all the fenders and gas tank etc. hell, the piece might be small enough to drop out with all the oil. doubt it but will try.

from what ive seen on the manual tho, u dont need that puller. just says first time the heads, then remove the head bolts, remove head, then loosen the nuts for the cylinders, pop it loose then remove it all the way, ( of course dont let the piston drop onto the case ) . but what does the tool do then>?

Hey Biohazard don't mean to lecture you but if someone on this site says you need a puller - you need a puller. Especially if it's Gerhard (aka paso750)

i understand sorry im used to trucks , cars, etc, were its not by the hour but what needs to be done.

i never paid by the hour. I do know big dealerships charge 75-80 an hour or more. so yea 45 an hour is cheap. but like alot of people on this tiny little planet, i cant afford probebly even 30 an hour, i know theres alot of mechs, that will say it took 8 hours, when in reality it only took them half the time. even tho splitting a motor i do think does take some time. I really do appreciate all the help so far. its just from the pictures and instructions it never said anything about a puller. but i will buy it since i trust this site more than an instruction manual. Ive looked all over and from what it all says this is a 750 pantah. but others are saying a monster engine is about the same thing and "would" fit.

is this my engine? found it on ebay, is that a good price? plus about $200-300 shipping...

as I mentioned earlier the puller is required to remove the left engine cover, hence the alternator side. To remove the engine cover on the clutch side no special tools are required.
I`d do that before pulling off the cylinders. Mobius in the 906 forum had found a piece of metal on the alternator side.
Check the oil closely for metal particles when draining it. Even if you`re lucky and you find the loose piece of metal (if there is one) you don`t know if it caused some damage or if that piece started being ground by something rotating. If there are metal particles you need to flush the engine properly.

About the cylinders. They have a base gasket on which liquid sealant was applied that hardens. So if you remove the heads and turn over the engine it could be the cylinders lift in which case you definetely would have to replace the base gaskets. What you could do is make 8 short metal or plastic tubes to pull over the cylinder studs when the heads are removed. Then put on a big washer and a nut on every stud and tighten by hand just to ensure the cylinders won`t be lifted. If you wanted to turn over the engine with the starter you have to do this before removing any engine cover or draining the oil of course.
If you want to skip this step and pull the cylinders off immedeately (which I would only do if every other possibility is exhausted) be sure to wrap the pistons so they don`t hit the cylinder studs or the edge of the engine case.

Who knows, if the problem is not in the heads or the piece is not in the sides it may just fall out after the cylinders are removed and the engine is flipped upside down. (that could become messy, so ensure there`s someone to help and there`s no oil on the cylinder stud threads when you reassemble) However it would be important to then identify where the piece comes from.

That ebay engine may be worth the money but considering what you paid for your Paso I`d figure it`s too expensive. It will be cheaper to repair yours, specially if you manage to do it yourself. Also that motor has a low milage which could mean it was stored a long time and the service is long overdue so you still would have to do the belts, check the valves etc.

750SS and Monster engines can be fitted but they need some modification. The width of the swingarm mounting boss is larger so the engine case has to be machined to fit the original swingarm. Also the front cylinder to frame mount is smaller but this only requires drilling the old thread and cutting a larger one.
