would like to introduce my 907 I.E.

Post by mh906evo »

Hi,
after I've been here in the forum as a passive member for some years, I want to introduce myself and my 1991's Paso 907 to you today.
I began my “Ducati-career” in 1985 at the age of 19 with a 1984 500 Pantah. This was followed by a 1979 MHR 900 of the first series, two 900SS belt-drive (1993's one (accident) and 1995s) and a 1977 860GTS, until I bought in 2005 the “thick-one”, how I jokingly call my 907. At this time she was almost original, had 32000km on the clock, was equipped with F1 exhaust pipes and the rims were painted black, but without removing the tire or even the weights before... The paint set was overall still in good condition.
In the past 5 years I've had only a few problems with her, a faulty water temperature sensor was the biggest problem (because it was so difficult to figure out)
And after I screwed a lot of other Ducatis the last five years, which were all not long in my possession, (a sports Desmo 500, an ST4 and a 888), this past winter I finally decided to take more care of my Paso.
The 907 is now the only bike that remained. All others have, more or less reluctantly, been sold. As you see, I've chosen the right bike ...
My idea was to let her get a few new looks and technical service. I have long considered whether I paint the rims back in black (insensitive, but not very chic) or in the original white (which does not take long for good, right?), or maybe the Gold paint from later Supersports? But I've decided a compromise. What also always bothered me, was the cockpit design, with its graph paper look, typical 1980th, but I always found that the white of the later-Veglia instruments is a lot nicer. Together with the wheels I also let re-painting the triple clamps, the passenger grab handle, the chain wheel and the cockpit cover (the one under the instruments).
The spring elements have been adjusted in spring rate and damping to my favorite solo trips, and my weight, the fork got cartridge inserts that can be adjusted in rebound and compression and spring tension. Not absolutely necessary, but nice if you have it.
Next winter I want to clean the injectors, possibly even check the regulator and then tune the bike on the dyno..
As I've thought about a completely new fairing with quick adjuster, has anyone experience with the products of Airtech?
If all works right, you will find a few pictures below showing the bike how it looks today. I look forward to your comments and opinions and hope you all have a nice season!
Greetings from Germany,
Rainer

Hi Rainer,

Welcom back to the 907 gang.
I've took the same route as you did.
started in '79 with a 900 SS bevelhead with spoked Borranis in blue/silver trim.
after that a '82 MHR and a '90 belt driven 900 SS I bought my 907 near Stuttgart in 2006 and rode her ever since.
the job you did on the wheels and dash looks great. I'm a fan of the white Veglia looks.
looking forward to hear more from you!

Bravo!
Looks nice and tidy. I do like white rims though..
The spring elements have been adjusted in spring rate and damping to my favorite solo trips, and my weight, the fork got cartridge inserts that can be adjusted in rebound and compression and spring tension. Not absolutely necessary, but nice if you have it.
Could you please elaborate on these little bits (I see them on the tube tops) and possibly to any internal fork mods/parts you may have? Maybe post a link to a supplyer you use. Any information on fork adjustability I soak in because one of the most important things for me is a stable/firm front end under heavy braking. Thanks.

Hi Rainer,

I`d also like to know more about the forks, the rim stripes and the speedometer background. Where did have that done ?
A very nice and clean bike btw.

Thanks guys for your answers,
the suspension: for me, there was a basic problem, the spring/damping was not to get into balance between the front and back. And the adjustment of the damping on the rear shock are indeed manifold (62 clicks), but was sensible only within the range of three. So the order was to adjust the suspension between front and back, and stretch the damping in their setting.
For the front, springs were replaced at a suitable rate, new bushings and stanchions and seals were installed and as an extra I have granted the fork the cartridges, which are including in one the rebound- and in the other the compression damping, and spring preload is possible. So the original rebound rate valve at the lower end of the fork is unproductive.
At the rear, the spring was renewed in matched rate, the damping was stretched in its field, new seals and bearings were installed and the reservoir was given a new nitrogen filling.
I have had the same company several years ago to make the Showa fork for my belt-drive Super Sport and the 38 Marzocchi fork my 860GTS. I then had a good experience and I am very impressed once again, the result is excellent in practice.
The only downer: you need lots of patience, I had to wait 8 weeks for the parts. So it’s best to send in the parts BEFORE the winter.
If anyone is interested: the company is:

Excellent bike & post. Welcome.

I like the detail on the wheels. All black is too dark, the white just gives it a nice lift. The normal rim tape is too thin, yours looks right.

What are the brake & Clutch master cylinders you have used, please?

Instruments are also very nice, but not sure if I would change mine :?

Interesting you could fit cartridges to front forks. Suspension man here said yes they fit, but no they don't work because of tapered spring end. Are yours different? Do the knobs on top adjust the preload?
I had new fork springs for my weight, 82KG + riding gear etc, and for my riding style, sporty  .... and use a hydraulic preload for the rear [Wilbers] when touring to adjust for extra weight.

Seen some pics of dzeus fastners, not good. Airtech fairings are lighter, never seen them but others say quality is ok.

You have had some beautiful bikes, do you miss any of them now?

ciao

Hi Rainer & welcome.

I am very interested in the white face guages and have visited the website at "newtacho". The only list 2 versions of white face guages, but not for the Paso.

Did you have these made on a special order or were they available off the shelf?

If made to order, what did you provide to the manufacturer in order for them to provide you with the final product?

Cheers.

Looks nice the bike, you can park on my driveway for sure.
I am looking for a similar bike here as well, last version with the bigger brake disks. Prices here are about 2500 for a black one, to somewhere to 2700 for a complete and good looking bike incl. owner manual and toolset in red. Red will be a more desirable colour despite the only 200 something originally black produced 907's.
Trubble is to find the original exhaust system. . .

How are the prices in Germany on this bike?

Just spoke to the owner on the phone, after a night without sleep due to my visit and possible buy of his bike, he decided not to sell to get a better nights sleep. . . .
Little disappointed here, however nice to notice the emotional bond he has with his 907 . . .
If you realy look you will see that the whole world is Ducati Red. . .

Proud owner of a;
- Ducati 907 ie 1992 in red
- Ducati 900 SSC Imola 1997 in red
- aprilia RST Mille Futura 2001 in infinity blue
- Alfa Romeo 159 SW 2007 in Grigrio Stromboli

Hi Olaf,

German prices you can find on Ebay.de or Ebay.uk and a lot of Paso's incl. 907 on Mobile.de. prices seemes to be comparable to Dutch prices.
if you gonna use cartridges, you can switch the springs as well.
these changes in the suspension are no "bolt on" jobs but need some machining and adaptations. But can be done IMO.

Sure, a lot details on Rainer's bike are superb. love that.

Hallo Rainer, vielen Dank für die Infos.
How much did those modifictaions cost if you don`t mind me asking. Also are the dial backgrounds a foil or complete plastics discs and did the shop change them ?
Did you replace the F1s as those are Shark cans ? I have the same ones.

Hello Nigel,
the Brake and clutch masters were from an 900 I.E.Monster as far as I remember, someone offered them in an Magazin especially for Italian Bikes called "Motalia", still a nice place to look for pars, beside Ebay .....
tapered spring ends - I dont know about it, but now there are new springs in the Fork maybe thats the reason why it is working...!? the black knobs at the top adjust Spring-preload, the small screws inside adjust at the left side the compression, and at the right side the rebound.
Hydraulic preload for the spring at the rear is nice ! but I only wanted to perfect the -even very good- original one.
Well, my past bikes: If I were able to afford them all, I'd done it... no, not really....Every of these bike had it's time for me, the MHR and Supersports I sold, because I did not wanted to be forced to too fast riding because of seating-position. The 500 Sport Desmo I sold because its 46 Horsepowers are'nt enough if you want only a little fun at riding, and only Good-Looking...is'nt enough....
the 860GTS was a really good bike, I loved it. But at that time, I had my second Supersport, an 27 year-old VW Westfalia Berlin which I'd restored, an 20 years old Audi 90, and my wife had an 14 years old Polo, so I had more than enough work to led them all only running. And my son got 5 years old, so I wanted a little more time for Family and a little less for vehicles... so I sold the Supersport and the 860GTS and took the known-for-its-unproblematicality- Paso 907.I.E.
The St4 was only to earn a little money with it (I bought it very cheap, maintained it and rode it for one year (great 916-Engine!), then sold it (good)
The 888 was only because it's such a nice bike !! I stood in the garage for hours, only looking and cleaning it.... and I knew that it would force me to race and even hurt my neck, but I had this beauty for one year, then sold it "good"
The first, the Pantah, which had 620ccm at least and ran 200km/h and the 900MHR I had, these two I miss because they were such "classic" bikes in style and technique (or is it only the time I miss, when I was 20 years old ?? :) :)
Greetings, Rainer

Hello Jaffa,
I let made the Gauges how I wanted them, as you can see, there is also the Elefant left at the rev-counter and in the same letters as in the Tacho there is "Ducati Paso 97 I.E."
You can let make all you want from this company. You have to scan the original gauges and tell him what you want, he works it out and ask you if it is allright until you agree. If you want, I can sent you my scans or mor pictures from mine, if so, please sent an PM.
Greetings, Rainer

Hello Ducolaf,
the 907 is between 2000€ up to 3500€ realistically. Some want to get rich with it but I never heard that someone sold one for more than 3500€. Good luck, it is a nice bike !
Greetings, Rainer

Hello Bertus,
thanks "for the flowers" :)
Greetings, Rainer

Hello Gert,
well, costs  the Suspension- overhaul was nearly 1000€, but thats less than buying new Forks and Rear-Shock and: it is still an Italian bike with Italian Suspension, no Showa, no WP :-) and the refreshed parts are everything you need for ambitioneerd street-surfing.
The F1 are Sharks today, I know. But on mine is only stamped "F1" and a number. The official papers for them are from "dynastiplast di bettini" how this firm was named before it became "Shark". I've also got a pair of originals and a pair of Conti for it, but not those who looks like the Beveld-ones, the are more modern, but sound even very well...
where do you live in Germany?
Greetings, Rainer

Really like your bike. Did you make the instruments up yourself or did you buy them? I experimented with white too, but always liked the yellow from the Benellis... So I played with just the tach being yellow. The instrument lights are dim, so the white was too hard to read at night.

As I've thought about a completely new fairing with quick adjuster, has anyone experience with the products of Airtech?

Also, I bought the Airtech lightweight replacement front fairing. It was rough, so I filled it in and replaced the headlight with multiple halogens/leds. Just made an aluminum plate that mounts to the headlight bracket to hold the lights. The OEM fairing can be replaced in 15 minutes.

Hello pencilbeam,
ah, so this is yours, with the LED-Lights at the front, nice !! even the yellow at the revcounter is a good idea !

I let the gauges made by a manufacturer in Germany. I had an Idea how it had to look, wrote him what I wanted and he did it. The gauges came ready to mount, with it's form and all holes drilled in. For a while, I thought about the design of the "Corse" Rev-Counter from the 916 (the green one), but at the end, I didn't want to have different looks in this symetrical Dash.

Is your Frontlight brighter than the original ? was this the reason for you to change it ?

Actually it's NOT as bright at this point...! I did it for looks and just for fun/save weight. The big reflector of the OEM is hard to beat. I did this a few years back and LED and HID technology has really increased. I would recommend these for LEDs. Very inexpensive and low wattage (less drain on elect. for more candle power)
