Sprocket carrier bearings

Found that my carrier bearings are shot. How does one get the bearings out? I don't want to ruin my sprocket carrier.

The two bearings sit (with a spacer between them) in a steel sleeve that`s pressed into the sprocket carrier. The bearings can only be pressed out to the front side. The things to watch out for is to support the steel sleeve in the front and not the sprocket carrier as you dont want to press out the sleeve and if you apply pressure from the rear side of the sprocket carrier to do it on the bearing not on the steel sleeve.
For the reassembly put the bearings in the freezer over night and clean the sleeve then the bearings will slide in easier. It shouldn`t be necessary to mention but I`ll do it anyway. Do not use a BFH when working with bearings.

When you say front side, do you mean the sprocket side?
Doing a search, I found this bearing # SKF-6005-2RS1/C3, is this correct?
No worries, no BFH used.

yes and yes. You`ll see when you turn the sprocket carrier around that the steel sleeve has a flange on the rear. So there`s no getting them out and back in on this side.

I want to get my new Shinkos mounted up and see how they work.

Put the complete assembly in the oven at a low heat for half an hour. Aluminium expands more than steel. Then, wearing a thick workshop glove, hold the ass'y in your left hand. Place a large socket over the bearing and give it a hefty whack with a hammer. It will move. I have never found the freeze method to work, only the heat.

Heat helps because anyhow bearing have a very little movement inside their seat. Hammer & punch or using an hydraulic press will do the job

I forget, anyway I heated the whole assembly and placed a 19mm socket on the exposed bearing and hit it with a lump hammer while holding the assembly in my hand. Which almost qualifies the job as 'by hand'.

Thanks to all for the info! The bearings pushed right out and the new ones pushed right in.
Now to try out these new Shinkos.


One thing to watch out for mounting these tires, the little rubber stringy things on the bead made it leak around the rim, so I had to break the bead and trim them off to get a good seal.
