source of black foam seal under turn signal lens?
Hi,
does someone know where to find this? On repainted mirrors this is usually missing. All foam seals I`ve found so far were either white, too wide, too high or too hard.
G.

Funny you should bring this up. Just ordered a roll of anti rattle felt hoping to get the job done. Looks very close to what is on all three of mine. Just have to figure out a way to cut it to the width needed and keep it straight
Years ago when I was working for Honda they had a kit with different widths of the stuff. I have not been able to find a similar kit anywhere. this looks to be the same composition but the narrowest I can find is an inch wide so I will have to cut it to fit

you should be able to cut that with a metal ruler and a razor blade, scalpell or sharp carpet knife.
If felt will work I don`t know. 1mm is rather thin and I`m unsure you can lay that around corners.
The original foam strip is 4mm wide and 2.5mm high (maybe it was 3mm) but it`s very soft and hydrophobic.

speaker foam insualtion strip (gasketing tape) comes in 5x2mm (wxh) or 9x3mm. The last might be ideal but cutting a self adhesive foam in half is almost impossible.
Ordered these now. It couldn't get any cheaper:

Re: source of black foam seal under turn signal lens?
I have done this before by using clear silicone applied thinly ( I cut the tip off the applicator nozzle so the hole was about 1.5mm ) and ran a bead around the lens hole where the seal would normally sit . I painted the lens edges and the lens hole with melted wax ........ bit hard to explain but basically use the wax as a masking tape so the silicone don't stick outside of the area where the seal would normally sit. Then place the waxed lens in position without tightening the screw and smooth out silicone with a flat thing ( I used a bread knife ) leave till the silicone sets . remove lens and the flatted out silicone leaves a feathered edge which can be trimmed with a sharp knife , and once the wax is removed you have a custom made (mostly) weather proof seal. Another thing I have seen done ( not me ) is to strip the insulation off a piece of thin wire and stick that in place ( we were trying to resurrect a speedo assy on a classic boat ) ....... spose you could use some crazy string ... that stuff in an aerosol can that kids squirt over everything........or even a thin O ring

Re: source of black foam seal under turn signal lens?
I think I`m sorted.
That tape is too wide and it`s too thin although that would depend on how soft it is. The original foam is soft and twice as thick. A stiffer foam may have to be thinner or the lens won`t fit.
Hamish's method will probably create the perfect seal. Not sure if there are more difficult ways to do it tho

It's also available in 3mm and 5mm thickness and thicker still if you wanted but 10mm seems to be the minimum width that is available. It wouldn't be difficult to halve the width with a craft knife and a straight edge.paso750 wrote:I think I`m sorted.

This is something I will have to look into myself soon as my fairing panels and mirrors are currently with the painters getting the damage from earlier this year repaired. A friend also suggested Hamish's method. I don't fancy trying it though. My hands are definitely not steady enough.

If you carefully cut this in half you might solve your problem fairly cheaply too. I could describe best way to do it but I am sure G you will have worked that out already Any excess can be gently trimmed once the Lens is refitted.

yeah that's sorta where I was thinking with the aerosol string stuff .the 1/4" dia is a bit big , someone must use a smaller dia "noodle" for something
