Gasoline smell

Post by pasophist »

My bike reeks of gasoline and I can't find the problem. I have K&N air filters and twin Dellortos. Otherwise stock fueling. Cant seem to find any leaks, and the gas cap fits tightly. Bike starts fine and is not flooding. Runs perfectly. But when it sits in the garage, it smells like an open gas can!

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks-

Pasophist.

I'm assuming the 750 tank mounts the same way as a 907, if not, none of this will make sense.

On my 907, the round mount under the front of the tank had a cracked weld. It took me forever to find where my bike would occasionally leak gas, but that was it. Could be that yours has cracked and you don't see the leak. (Mine would only show a leak at higher speeds when I got a slight trickle of gas on the side of the tank, coming from teh front).

It could be anywhere. Light a match and hold it closely around the tank and underneath. Just kidding.

Ok, this might sound stupid, but U have to check all pipes, tank, etc very closely and maybe put some pressure to tank, if there is leak in tank, cause U know, that gasoline can come out from very small hole and immediatelly after that mixed to around air(and seems, that "no leak" at all.... Btw, DONT smoke in Your garrage, untill You find leak, or again one Ducati have gone to "heaven of Ducatis", what we really dont want to hear!

This smell might come from inside the carb...
I mean the "breath of the engine (what's the english for? maybe "ram"???). It was usual in some cars like Alfa Romeo...
Are the air filters wet of gasoline?
Sometime it happens that at slow rews (or highest too!) a part of mixture and fuel "jumps" inside and out the carb and dirts the filters of gasoline. It might be nothing of wrong, or an incomplete closing of an intake valve. just smell the filters to understand it.
have a nice ride, Nicola
