Clutch Melt!

Post by pasophist »

Just got back from Sport Bike West. The Mighty Paso held her head up quite well against a field of squids on new CBRRs and the like.

Next day, on the highway home though, gear selection was inhibited. By the time I stopped, the clutch cover was burning hot. An HOUR after she was shut down, I got a minor burn on the cover! Took it apart- SEIZED solid. Something clearly let go and the basket was welded to the first plate! Showed it to my local bike coop and the racers said they'd rarely seen a clutch so chewed up!

Anyway, I need a basket, steel and friction plates, springs- the works. Anyone know where I can source this stuff? Does Barnett sell a product for the Paso? Is it the same clutch as any other Ducatis? Is the Gerhardt special installation schematic reliable?

Any help I can get- especially sourcing parts short of the Ducati price level would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

I don't know where you're from, but a dismantled paso from G.B. was for sale on ebay some days ago... the basket and the other external parts should do for you.
The reason of your trouble might be various:
1) the bearing on the slave cylinder was gone (impossible to know)
2)the slave cylinder was gripped and could not go back completely inside its seat (impossible to know)
3) the pipe or the master pump are gone and the oil can't go back from the slave cylinder to the pump after gear selection. the cylinder still works and the clutch slides a bit. This makes it become HOT and destroys all the alluminium parts and the plates.TEST IT CAREFULLY BEFORE ANYTHING ELSE!!!
it's not good to destroy a new part the very next day you've installed it!!!
have a nice ride, Nicola

Is the Gerhardt special installation schematic reliable?
I guess every Duc mechanic made his own experiences and will tell you about a different clutch disc order. You may follow the setup as shown in the parts manual or what`s written in some Duc restoration guides.
