cold days, problem with starting the engine

hello guys,

a little bit cold for last days in my country and I`ve got problems with starting the engine
at the morning.

choking doesnt help, I just have to ride a little bit on 1st gear and it helps,
but not always. week ago only one 1minute ride was enough
now, when it`s colder, it is not enough...

is it just a problem that happens to old bikes?

or sth has to be looked after?

Ive never had a problemstarting my bike its nothing to do with the carb as I still run the weber in mine, make sure the plugs are right type better iridium ones and that they are cleaned,check fuel and line sounds simple but if you leave fuel low it can evaporate to nothing in cold conditions! If it dont fire check first your gettin a spark take out a plug place against the head yeah? also I run fuel with REDEX this will look after your plugs and carb also when you get time put some in cylinders specially if old bike should clean it out a bit works for me....desmodave.

but I think that I didnt explain my problem correctly

so, once again.

in warm period, to start the engine I just had to push "start" button with accelerating a little bit (and choke on)
but now it doesnt work.

the engine starts, but after some seconds it turns off.
accelerating doesnt help, choking for more time - as well.
is seems that even I cannot accelerate more than (let say) 40%

as I wrote only riding on 1st gear helps...
after 1-2minutes riding the engine seems well..

I was said that it could be problem with air filter....

You should check to make sure the choke cable is working 100% correct. If the choke doesn't work, it is hard to start.

best to eliminate any mechanical / electrical variables...

check the plug leads condition.
a weak spark can cause hard starting when cold because the rich mix is harder to generate a good spark to ignite the mix.

increases in density (rich fuel or higher compression engines) generally need hotter sparks.

easiest way to check plug leads is to use a multimeter and read ohms scale
check both leads are around the same figure

check compression

after this...then you can tinker all you like with the carby...

on a personal note...it never gets below 10 degrees here (not when i ride, anyway) so what would I know about cold starts???
I would recommend letting the bike warm up a bit after starting before riding; just a personal choice. nuthin' worse than stalling in front of a truck...

Sounds like you might have picked up some dirt in one of your low speed (pilot) jets.
