Tachometer/Rev Counter: Electronic or Mechanical?

Post by Lost_Coast_Paso »

Greetings. The tach/rev counter on my '91 907 quit working. An earlier thread talked about a "Proximity Switch", part #55240051A, but my parts catalog shows a cable and "rev counter gears", part #066792160, which looks very much like the mechanical tachometer that has been on every bike I've owned, going back 30 years. Is the tach/rev counter an electronic device, a mechanical device, or a combination of the two?

Thanks,
Tim

it`s purely mechanical. The switch you`re referring to is part of the ignition system.

Have you tried to check the cable? They are prone to fail.

Mine quit the week before last. The cable was broken about 1 inch below the tach fitting. I re-routed it as so not to have it bent where it connects to the tach.
