Post by ducbertus »

has anyone experience with JE pistons about weight, durability, etc.
I saw a set offered, but don't know them.

Any input is welcome.

They are very good pistons. Lots of racers and others use them. I think they are all forged.

Jon and Gert,

thank you for your comments. :D

Gert, do you know by chance how heavy the original pistons are? something about 500 gram?

IIRC, JE 435g & OEM 460.

If buying a used set and want fresh rings,
do buy from US, veeery much cheaper!
http://www.ca-cycleworks.com/ has them f e.

A word of warning about used pistons, Ducati's have a tight tolerance on the piston to wall clearance. They classified pistons as A or B fit. I bought a used set only to find they had too much clearance. They also wear in the ring grooves. I looked into stock bore J&E pistons, but no gaurantee that the Nikasil plating would not have to be redone for fit. I ended up buying J&E ST-2 pistons, sending the cylinders and pistons to Millenium for a bore and Nikasel plating, and shimming the 11:1 pistons to yield 10:25 compression. I use a FBF chip and 89 octane gas, the motor runs strong and gives me a consistent 50 mpg. I highly recommend J&E and CA cycleworks
