Cam belt and valve covers.

Post by nickta »

Welcome to the New Year everyone.

As the temperature around this part of Aust is hitting 35deg and above, I thought I would give the belts and valves a check (way too hot to ride!). The Cam belt covers look a bit sick, a little warped and bent from over tightening maybe? After a little hunting around, all I have found is a second hand set (3 piece plus inspection covers) for an ST2 in the US, or numerous 2 piece affairs for the 2002 900 Monster. The 2 piece units look like Ducati tried to make things easier in manufacturing, and incorporated 2 of the 3 piece unit into 1. Has anyone ever replaced these covers with an after market unit or adapted something like the 900 Monster unit? To make it all the more confusing, the earlier 900 Monster's used the same 3 piece unit the 907 did (even the same part numbers). A company in Aust that makes Carbon Fibre covers have a set that "fits all Monster models", but I'm a bit hesitant to buy and try and find out they don't quite fit.

As for the Valve covers, is there an after market cover available? The OEM's are no longer available too.

Cheers.

Nick.

The cam belt covers on all 900 engines from the 906 to the 900SS and Monster prior to the DS engine are interchangeable including the ST2. Can't help you with after market valve covers though.

Have you tried Gowanloch for the valve covers ?

The finned valve covers of the bevel Ducs will fit on newer Ducs, too. They look nice and cool better but they are higher. So the front cover of the vertical cylinder cannot be swapped due to the airbox.

There were aftermarket ones in carbon but they are super rare and didn`t properly seal.
The only other aftermarket ones I know are from Ducati performance but they are quite expensive. They come chrome or silver.

G I think something was lost in translation as it's the side belt engine covers that I believe have warped in the heat. ???

Thanks Lads.

I found the fella in Sydney with the Carbon Fibre (Thanks E.Stiv!) covers. He is happy to post out a set to see if they fit, and refund if they don't. About to give Italspares a shot for a set of belt covers. The Valve covers were more of a try and keep things the same. I found a set of Gold Paso 750 valve covers in the US. Well, almosta set. There were 3, so not quite a full set.

Oh well. Back to work....

Found some more covers at Pro Italia in the US, or at least they are on their Parts list. Its the 2 piece setup as for the '02 900 Monster. Nothing for anything earlier. The Vert unit is US$32 and the Horiz is US$101.

They also have valve covers (Part No for an ST2). Don't ask what they cost!

Cheers.
