Check your rear shock!

Post by paso904 »

Hello All,

I have owned my 1989 906 Paso from new and last week I took it for its annual MOT check. The tester mentioned a small amount of play in the rear suspension unit which we guessed was due to some wear in the upper bush mounting. Yesterday I investigated it and had an unpleasant surprise when I found that the top 'eye' had a crack right through it:

I have posted an appeal for a unit in the for sale section.

Theres a shock on ebay right now. That might be able to be welded as well.

I don't know. I'd fear the welding could break again.

Hello All,

Many thanks for your replies. The unit is the original one and has covered 88k kms. I did wonder about having it welded but I would be worried that the 20 year old alloy would just break again somewhere else. I have had a look at http://www.hagon.co.uk and it looks like a suspension unit from a 916 will be a direct replacement. Can any one confirm this please? (If so, it will make finding a replacement on e-bay easier). For the time being I will try to source a replacement in the UK in view of shipping costs.

Thanks again for your help.

Regards,
David Harvey - England.

definetely not. The shock of the Paso is much longer. (The one of the 916 is mounted on the upper side of the swingarm and is therefore shorter)

Have you sorted the shock yet?
I had this happen on my 1990 Paso years ago. I had it welded and it's been OK since then.

The bushing in the shock had a crack or the whole upper part of the shock had a crack?

Hi Gert,

It was the alloy surrounding the upper bush that had a crack. I took a photo if you are really interested.

pictures are always helpful for the wannabe Paso enthusiast so they can know exactly what to look for in considering a Paso purchase.

I have a small amount of play, too. Will fix it this winter.
A pic would be nice to see what problems lies ahead of me.... :-(

Hello All,

A photo of my formerly cracked (and subsequently repaired) shock can be found at:

http://docs.google.com/View?id=dgv8c3qz_342cffkbhf8

Image

I must stress that there was no play whatsoever in either of the bushes (pretty good after 65,000 miles). The small amount of play was entirely due to the crack.
