I agree it will always cost money with any second hand bike, because after all nobody sells a bike in peak condition. I have time to do the work and enjoy fixing old bikes. Never spent more than £650 on a bike. Non runners are the best as typically the fault is electrical, and for some reason electrics freak people out so they sell perfectly good bikes that are cheap and easy to fix. Rarely can you drive a large capacity bike hard enough to kill the engine. Hence my growing collection, collectively bought for less than the price of a 916.

Ducatis are worst for potential muppetry in my opinion though as there aee so many supposed expert dealers out there who don't have a clue what they are doing! With older Jap bikes it tends to be crap grounds and burnt out electrics or knackered cam chains and tensioners let go too far

also carb and injection issues, never complicated and if you have a clew cheap and easy to fix.
Lots of guys turn them into box jobs as well, sit forgotten for years. Cost a little more to get running but generally low mileage bikes of all sorts for cheap, almost makes me feel guilty  almost
Once picked up a 350 pre unit BSA for the price of collecting the boxes. Took a month to get it running sold it for 10K. Was so happy I gave away my 750GT to someone wanted it real bad. Now looking back I wish I had that GT :,( But me and my 5 year old son spent the summer touring the country back in the summer of 79 in a redone chevy van(250/6) He's 37 now and still has many fond memories of that summer along Route 66. Calls it the best simmer of his life, Hey that's what dad's are for

I have a tool kit for a 907, I'm asking about £900.00 for it. Mind you for that price there is the bike to go with it. It's a clean 92 model with 32000 miles on the clock. I've owned it for five years. I need a lighter bike, my back is not what it used to be.

Back on ebay due to timewaster, I'm bidding on it for a friend of mine who's honeymooning at Mugello that weekend.
It was registered exactly 20years before his wedding, A good omen? £800 already with a week to go!
