LED Idiot lights

Post by Derek »

I wasn't too happy with the dimness of the warning lights on my 907ie so I've just changed them all to LEDs. I can now see them in daylight! :)
I used these ones off ebay

Cheap and cheerful although not very well put together but they did the job.

I'd probably have been better using these which would fit in the original bulb holders.

Its a bit of a task changing them, I found it easiest to remove the instrument panel. You also have to make sure you fit them the right way round as LEDs are directional and don't light up if you get the polarity wrong.

LED lights are a wonderful example of how new technology can help older bikes and cars.
I bought some too, but have yet to install them. Glad to hear they work well.
I am also going to do my taillight in LED.

Cheers,
Phil

This is better . I had fitted a 25w halogen bulb to the blinker idiot light , reasoning that as it wouldnt be on for long it wouldnt melt the dash , but I wouldnt have got away with that in any of the other idiot lights , and the one's on my SS were just as bad . I think I'll get me some of these too :)
Why ( the bloody hell !) dont bike manufactures put self cancelling blinkers on our bikes. I have a 1980 bike ( RD400) and had a 86 ( FZ750 ) that both had them ..... what the hell happened? Oh yeah .... Im real bad at riding round with a blinker on , Im surprized it hasn't got me killed . when I think of all the times Ive had to say a silent thankyou to some motorist for NOT pulling out even tho I was indicating.
I wish I was young again............Id be heaps smarter than last time

I'm not too bothered about doing the tail light. At least it's got 2 bulbs, unlike my ST4s and my previous 900SS both of which I converted to LED, in fact the ST4s now has no incandescent bulbs at all with the headlight being HID both dip and main beam.
If you are thinking of replacing the tail light bulb with an LED version you might be disappointed. I tried several of these and never got a good result. Because of the directional nature of LEDs they are not reflected within the lamp to fill it with light, so you tend to get a bright spot in the middle and the rest of the lamp is dim. I built a board and covered it with about 40 LEDs of 13,000mcd each. This allowed me to have some of them on at reduced brightness for the tail lamp and all of them on at full brightness for the stop lamp.

I wired in a piezo-electric buzzer to my other bike which helped train me in short order to pay better attention to cancelling the signal. I removed it after a season or so.....too annoying at stops in traffic.

I have changed to LED's and HID's (Xenon) systems in my bikes already about 1 year ago, as they are already enough cheap/realible... :)

I have put just Xenon's to high and low beams in my KTM Adventure and same time i also add DLR lights (by LED) to it. Next step is to put POWER LED extra lights to its crash bars.... as you know, "in forrest", it needs sometimes plenty of light to find very good/flat place for tent ....

Surely have to have some solar chargers also    Also that tecnology is already enough cheap.

... everything good for Paso drivers for this summer ...

Can you tell me a reliable source to purchase led lights for bike? I need different color lights.
